the abyss means...
To an extent I cannot really remember what happened. I was just a young thing at the time.
I no longer feel the cold when I think of it. I know I did once.
I don't know for sure now which cave it was we were going to. My mother called it "The Troll Cave." It could be one of any number of caves in Norway. I doubt it was this one.
I do remember it took a long time to climb to.
We left our maxi in the valley, and started to climb.
We climbed for hours.
We climbed through the drizzle into the cloud of mist.
We climbed through the cloud of mist until the trees went away.
We climbed up the rocky ground as the wind tore at our wet clothing.
I think.
I remember.
But I was only six.
I remember getting to the cave. We were eager to enter as we had been promised that it would be a fantastic sight.
My parents got out the flares that we would need to navigate inside the caves.
And then discovered they did not have a lighter.
They realised they must have left it in the car. They were not prepared for caving.
I was not happy. I was wet, and cold, and did not get to see the pretty caves.
Instead we got to walk back down the mountainside.
By the time we got to the bottom we were exhausted.
My parents went to get the lighter from the car. And could not find it. (The lighter that is, not the car.)
We had had it on us all along.
By that time it was much too late...
